And I thought I had it rough being the first man in Los Angeles to sell Handbags - out comes a Yahoo article last week about controversy over lingerie shops in Saudi Arabia employing only male salespeople. What, what, what?
Yeah, as bizarre as it sounds to many of us here in America, women aren't allowed to work in shops, so the men have to push the bras and panties! The article said, "that means men are talking to women about bras or thongs, looking
them up and down to determine their cup sizes, even rubbing the
underwear to show how stains can be washed out. The result is mortifying for everyone involved — shoppers, salesmen, even the male relatives who accompany the women."
Although is sounds like a wet dream for Samantha on Sex and the City, I guess I can see why it's not working out for so many of the ladies of the Middle East.
A boycott was launched by some 50 women - because a law went into effect in 2006 saying only women could work in lingerie shops, however the religious hardliners have been opposed and the malls kept the salesmen ringing up panties at the counter - I wonder how many of them are gay and closeted? Maybe the women LOVE buying lingerie there.
One one woman hidden behind her black veil told the reporter she was suspicious of WOMEN salespeople in lingerie shops. "Bad things happen there," she said, claiming that women can sneak a picture of other women changing with their mobile phones. WTF? I guess she's not worried about the men taking pictures - or maybe she's not telling us everything she knows...
I'll stick with selling handbags, thank you very much, although I'm sure there are millions of men here in the USA who would quit their high-paying lawyer, doctor, and actor jobs just so they could have a front row seat in front of a Victoria's Secret fitting room.
