The thing that's kinda neat is that a similar filling is used for a Viet sweet dumpling in which the skin is made of sticky rice. Called banh troi nuoc, the dumplings are poached and then simmered briefly in ginger syrup. Look for that recipe in Asian Dumplings in the "Sweet Treasures" chapter.
Kim -- this isn't quite banh bot loc. The version I have in Asian Dumplings is what you're thinking of, filled with pork and shrimp but it's not in the banana leaf wrapper. They're poached as half-moons -- a naked version, and served with the garnishes. Lordy, I'm hungry!

I sat there wide-eyed with my jaw on the ground not being able to tear myself away to try and get ready for work. I couldn't even fathom what was happening or why. All I knew was that a plane flew into the tower. I didn't know details.

For a long time I covered up the neighbor's chain-link fence with Morning Glories. A fabulous show. Granted, one afternoon I heard a little child ask her Mommy "What are those plants on that lady's fence?" and Mommy answered "Weeds," but that sting went away by the next morning.

Our stormwater service fees and other water utility costs keep rising. Why? Just so many people in Durham, right? No. Not exactly. The reason Durham will have to spend $300,000 to $700,000 to comply with the Jordan Lake clean-up rule: development, all of it. And as Raleigh presses the State to come up with a similar rule for its main drinking water supply, Falls, guess who is going to be paying the most to clean-up the lake as well? Durham. It is not unreasonable to say Durham is going to have to kick-in over $1 billion dollars to fix all the waterways in county it has impaired due to its fast growth. Waterways impaired with sediment, fecal coliform from human and domestic waste, nitrogen, metals, etc. Durham is not worried about it though. Who cares if the evidence shows these pollutants increasing as they and the developers collect all the money? After all, why should they worry? They will just fix it by continuing to raise water, sewer and stormwater fees. Durham makes money, developers make money, and once again the tax payers get screwed. And I guess if you are not in on the game, you get fired too. wllv20111108

This is just mean-spirited and petty. Here's a guy who has given most of his professional life to public service in Durham County and done more than creditable service through some pretty important issues. He gets in trouble for giving commission members legal advice they don't want to hear on a hot zoning case and they dump him - only months before his planned retirement. Shame! is all I can say.I also believe true "equal opportunity" in practice requires an open hiring and employment process. I think both Patrick Baker and Lowell Siler are wonderful people. However, as someone who would potentially compete for these jobs, it is disheartening to have these positions be filled as a result of backroom negotiations rather than open processes.
